Family Portraits on the Wall! (at last)

26 September 2011

When we went to Asheville this summer for the Shaw flooring competition...(please go vote there are only a few more days!  THANKS!) We also had my great friend Destinee take family pictures for us.  She is a fabulous photographer, and it has been fun to watch her business take off!  I thought I would share some of the pictures with you, and how I framed and displayed the first few pictures!

Anyway, I recently got an invitation from Kristen to share a way that I display my family pictures... And since I just got these new pictures from Destinee I thought "Seize the day" , well it wasn't quite that dramatic, more like.. "Crap I've gotta get this done before the post is due...!"

I wanted three large images in my entry, but I couldn't find the frames that just said "BUY ME".  And I went to about 5 different places.  Well, because I couldn't find anything I loved, I decided to change the plan for now, and just bought some $5 dollar Wal-world frames... that way if it didn't turn out great, then oh well.  But, I am really happy with how it turned out.

Where did I hang them?  I have this little "hall"  between our master bedroom and the guest half bath, on our main floor.  We used to have a bunch of family pictures there, but since we installed our wainscoting (and had Lydia)  I have yet to hang anything on the walls.  So, I thought I would put the pictures here.

I started with a quick coat of spray paint (Rustoleum's Lagoon in Satin -  I love this, I painted a table this color months ago and have yet to show you it... ya know, for a blogger, I am REALLY bad at blogging!) for the frames which were black to begin.

I thought it might be fun to ignore the wainscoting when I hung them, so here is the before and after. I had to hang the middle picture on a 2x4 block so that it hung flat!  I need to take pictures so you can see!

And because I like the little pink specter walking through this next image, I have to share it.  This is what always happens when trying to take pictures (and you should have seen all the sheets and pillow cases that she pulled out of the cabinet while I was doing this... and technically is still there 2 days later!  Whoops!)

Please check out her great blog line up:

What do you think?
If you like it please consider pinning it
or sharing via facebook or twitter!  THANKS!

Using An Inspiration Photo to Design A Room

13 September 2011

This weeks Tip Junkie post is about using inspiration posts to create the look you want.  So, I thought I would write a quick little post showing you how I would use in inspiration image!

Actually this is also a good way to help a person define their own personal style a little bit too... so I hope for those of you that don't know what direction to move for your own home that this might help out a bit.

We all do it, we find an image that just speaks to us...
(insert smile! when you see the image)  I know, I know, I am going to use my Shaw room.
I love this room for many reasons, mostly it is just very me!
Okay, so you may have seen this picture before, it is the room Roeshel and I designed for the 30 day of HGTV flooring competition.  (YES, I would be SO thankful if you voted for us!)

I think I will be able to break this room down really well for you all.  Using the next post I am writing on tip junkie as a guideline (it should post on this Wednesday, the link is for my last post...)

First break down each image.  This should be very specific!!  What in particular do you love, what don't you love? This is what I mean by breaking down the image, see below:

The walls:
  • The paint color, (Copen Blue by Sherwin Williams btw)
  • The texture of the board and batten
  • The Moldings!! Large crown, baseboards and windows are wrapped nicely.
The colors:
  • Mostly neutral furnishings
  • Accent colors pop throughout the room, on the pillows, the accessories,
  • That the chandelier is painted.  I LOVE the bright color!
  • The rug ties them all together and helps the space to flow.  (just like I talked about here.) I LOVE this rug!
  • The flooring is picked up by the colors of the frames and furnishings

The textures:
  • I love the wicker chairs
  • The stacked crate end table (I was so happy when I found those boxes!)
  • The natural plants scattered throughout the space!
  • The iron fencing!
  • The handscraped flooring.

The found objects all mixed in!!!!:
  • The iron fencing, used as art above the fireplace!
  • The crates, re purposed as an end table
  • The art easel used to display art
The typography that is a repeated element throughout:
  • The Subway Art - (tutorial at the link, something that anyone can make!)
  • The ottoman and matching pillows
  • The grain sack pillows
  • Books used throughout
  • The large letters on the wall ( you can see in the image below)

What I don't love:
The drapes, they are hung too low ( we only had those to work with so, we worked with what we had!)
I would have liked a more grand fireplace.

Second Pick out your favorite elements...

And create a mood board with those element.

Pick out your colors! and presto you know where to start

(Sorry, but I am skipping the third and fourth step in this post, since they are mostly about shopping etc... it is hard to show on a "pretend"  room! In case you are wondering why I can't count...my daughter skips numbers all the time when she is counting and it is just plain cute!)

Fifth: Don't be afraid to edit...
As you can see our list was sorta long above, not everything you like about your image needs to be incorporated!  You want to be able to breathe in this space.  So don't try to cram everything in!

Okay.  Now that we have an idea of how to create a room from an inspiration photo, don't forget to join us for our mood board event!

with a TON of your favorite bloggers!  (and interior designers!)

Pin Head Project Party #1

06 September 2011

Welcome to the Monthly Pin-head Project Party!

Okay people let's do this little link party.  I am not planning on a tutorial here (sorry)... I simply do not have time right now.  We are working on a project with HouseLogic that has a deadline, and we have been up many late hours... and still just scraping by.  But hopefully we will be done soon... and on time! But the good news, is that I have found some free audio books online to keep me busy while I was painting, and caulking, and sanding...

But this project has nothing to do with paint... so lets get right down to it.  My project the month comes from a post I pinned from mmmcrafts...  Let me 'splain... With my first born, Etta, I had a lot of time on my hands and getting quilts crocheted and dresses made was easy.  Now with two girls... and this blog.  I haven't made much for my second daughter, Lydia.. so I decided that this project would be for her.

I thought it would be fun to make a quilt.  And I have been loving the chevron pattern (who doesn't?)... So, I made here a little chevron quilt.  I know that it will be fully dated in about 5 years(both colors and style), but I love it right now, and that is all that matters.  (besides, maybe when she has children of her own it will be retro?!)

I am a lazy seamstress so it isn't prefect, and I haven't finished quilting it...but it looks cute, so i happy.

What do you think?

Okay so I also have an addiction to pinning (and making) dessert recipes...
and so far I have tried my fair share, but the most recent and favorite one is this:

They are fast easy and perfect!
I made some the first day and then stuck the dough in the fridge, they were even better the next day since the dough didn't melt out so much... so the verdict is, the longer the dough is in the fridge the better...

How We Built Our Custom Newel Posts; Tutorial

How We Built Our Custom Newel Posts Tutorial by me

Most recent picture like 2 exactly minutes ago!...still not done but really getting there...

For the rest of the story, check out these posts too: The Plan, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 and Part 6

Okay guys, as you know (or I hope you do) we love to amp up the style in our home with architectural elements.  So, when it comes to our stair project the newel posts were a really important feature.  I wanted big and chunky- no skinny "model sized" newel posts for me- give me some meat!

I know I haven't shown you the final... I am still working on finishing caulk and extra coats of paint, but we were asked a while back on how we built our newel posts.  I passed the job on by asking my handy hubby to make a tutorial up for you all!  He broke the project down into 10 simple images to show you the steps he took to accomplished the look that we wanted -simple, yet elegant.  Now this may or may not be the "correct" and "proper" way to build a newel post, but it worked for us and they are super solid and easy to make happen.. so there you go!

Feel free to use our ideas and make a beautiful version of your own, ***all I ask is that you please link back to this tutorial if you blog about it AND I wanna see what you do, so please just be sure to submit them to be featured!  Please let us know how yours turn out.  We would love to share it with everyone.

On to the -uh- quasi tutorial!

I need some help!

20 August 2011

Advice please!  I am switching over to Wordpress soon and I need help!  Or some advice!

Where do you guys get help with using Wordpress?
How in the world do I add html gadgets?
What should I know that I don't... in regards to using wordpress...(which is everything!)

I feel like a baby that has never seen a computer before, when I am on the Wordpress site?
Any advice, or websites that are good resources would help!

Thank you a million times for any advice!
Cassity

The Rain Dance! & Weekly Wisdom 2

14 August 2011

We have been stuck for almost 40 days in a record breaking heat wave... 40 days with 100+ degree temperatures (closer to 110) and no rain to speak of... until yesterday.  Our grass is almost dead, our zucchini croaked and our shrubs and trees have been suffering.  But no more, yesterday the clouds came and stayed! And it rained this morning as well.  I have never been so thankful for rain!

When it started raining, Justin and Etta went out to play.  I was holding Lydia, and didn't think she would appreciate getting soaking wet, as much as her two year older sister!  But here are some fun pictures along with so other fun rain inspiration!

(and because I can't show pictures of the big sister without some of the little one, here is Lydia!)

And since rain has been on my mind I thought I would show you some great rainy-day inspiration!
