Master Bathroom Remodel with Double Shower

Master Bathroom Remodel with Double Shower

After:

One of the biggest projects we tackled in this house was our master bath.  When we moved in, the master bathroom still boasted its 1984 decor: shiny peach floor tiles, three competing patterns of mauve/gray/peach/green/maroon wallpaper, popcorn ceilings, fluorescent lighting, an art-deco-style frosted glass window, two-toned faucets, cultured marble countertops, gray and teal painted cabinets, and a cave-like shower stall.  Aside from the bathroom's overall spaciousness, it was a disaster, and these "before" pictures don't do the horrors justice:

Powder Room Transformation!

Powder Room Transformation! by Carrie

Hello fellow Remodelaholics!
This is Carrie from Hazardous Design. Don't let the name of my blog scare you! The house my husband and I moved into about nine months ago is located on Hazard Ave. It was built in the late 1800's and needed a bit of TLC. Hazardous Design is a documentation of our renovation.

I was very excited when Cassity invited me to share the highlights of our recent powder room remodel and how it went from looking like this:

to this!
It is a bit of an improvement, no?

It all started back in December when my husband, Chris, began tearing apart the old bathroom,
and framed up a new wall to hide the plumbing stack in the corner.
Since we were going through all this trouble, we decided to reorient the bathroom sink and move it against the new wall instead of where it had been under the window. This meant we could have a bigger sink and wire for sconces. So next, we called in our electrician to do the rough wiring.
And then the plumber to install the pipes for the new sink location.
With that done, we could finally hang the wallboard.
Finally we got to the exciting stage of the project (at least for me!), where all of the decorative elements started to come together. We opted for wide plank vinyl beadboard hung 4ft high,
and to use several different sizes of white carrera marble tile.  Chris laid them in a mosaic pattern.
After painting the ceiling blue to match the wallpaper, he installed crown molding. It makes the tiny room look so elegant!
We called plumber back to install the toilet, sink, and radiator, and then asked the wallpaper hanger to come and work his magic.
You can imagine how excited we were at this point. The only thing left to do was install the sconces and overhead lighting!
So finally, after about six months of living with construction debris, dust, materials and tools in my kitchen, we have a completed powder room that looks like this:
The mirror was an antique mall find. It was originally gold, so I spray painted it black.

If you are curious about what else we might be working on on Hazard Ave, please stop by and visit us at Hazardous Design!

No More Brass Hardware:
Updated Powder Room With
Fancy Mirrored Vanity
contributed by View Along The Way

Finally! We have some "after" shots of the house. I'm going to post these one room at a time, starting today with our powder room!

Let's take a little journey back in time... to a time when you had to use THIS if you wanted to powder your nose downstairs:

The brass fixtures were a little less gleaming now than I imagine they were back in their heyday. The cabinet door was broken. There was a mysterious paper towel holder next to the vanity. (That's a new one for me. I guess the paper towels were there in case things got a little messier than usual?)

The grunge build-up on the laminate floors was enough to make you bulimic. And if you used the toilet (which we avoided), you quickly learned that it wasn't really screwed in to the floor, and rocked back and forth so you felt like you were on a fantastic roller coaster ride while taking care of your business. Not ideal.

You can't really tell in the picture above, but inside the old cabinet was a massive pile of hair. Er, weave. NASTY! And the walls were a much grosser color than they look here. I'd name it Green Baby Poo.

And then I'd throw it away.

Free DIY Modern Painted Border Idea

Free DIY Modern Painted Border Idea
contributed by House Tweaking
It’s Feature Friday!  On Fridays, I’ll be featuring one room in my house in its current condition even if there are some things I’d like to change about it.  If I do happen to improve something later, I can always revisit it when the time comes.  Plus, I’d kinda feel dishonest if I only focused on “finished” rooms in my house.  And if what they (the professionals) say is true, a room is never really finished anyways…you’re always tweaking it.  Concentrating on just one room weekly should give me some time to tidy it up a bit, too.  At least, I can throw all the toys into another room!
On the other side of my pantry, lies the only bathroom on the main floor…the powder room.  It’s painted one shade darker than the rest of our downstairs main living space.  I wish it had a window.

Half Bathroom Face Lift; Before and After

Half Bathroom Face Lift; Before and After

This was my half bathroom before.
The only bathroom on the main floor.
The most used bathroom and the only one people not living in the house ever use.
The biggest eye sore of the entire house.

Nothing was liked about it except for the tile floor which we installed last spring.  Not the builder block oak cabinets, laminate counter and  boring mirror.  Not the fact that it had silver fixtures when the rest of the house has that hideous brass  nor the fact it was so very  off white all over.

Powder Room With Black And White Walls

Powder Room With Black And White Walls
contributed by The Boys And Ruby
This is a re-post from quite a while ago, but when I ported over everything from blogger not everything came over correctly so here are our powder room before and after shots.  It’s quite possibly the tiniest room you’ve seen so we raised the ceilings a bit, swapped a corner sink for a floating one, paneled the walls (Ruben has really gotten good at that over the years) and put in a black damask wallpaper!  OH! I can’t forget my floors! They are the coolest floors EVER!  Quarter shaped mosaic marble, black, white and grey.  Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Powder Room Redo with Paint

Powder Room Redo with Paint

After about 18 hours of painting the laundry room and adjacent downstairs bathroom, I decided at some point that the bathroom needed a complete overhaul. Since Neale is in Europe for a week, it seemed like the perfect time to have the room be in a consistent state of disarray.

It's a half bath, recently converted from a full bath. It's a decent size for a bathroom, and it probably sees more use than the upstairs full bathroom because of it's central location. For this reason, it takes priority over the rooms upstairs which need some love.

Here's the task list:

  • Paint walls, touch ups
  • Repaint vanity (white), remove old hardware, install new hardware
  • Change out toilet seat
  • Curtain + hardware
  • Rug
  • Wall decor
Here's what it looked like before:

And, just to give you an idea of the layout, here's a poorly illustrated diagram:
And without further delay... the bathroom now...

Here's the total cost breakout:

  • $30 paint (Aubuchon -2 quarts of Benjamin Moore Color Preview Collection in Eclipse, flat finish)
  • $0 primer, sandpaper (my basement)
  • $40 rug (World Market)
  • $36 chalkboard wall decal (Wall Candy Arts)
  • $20 sheer curtain panel (World Market)
  • $19 picture frame (World Market)
  • $5 picture printing (CVS)
  • $17 curtain rod (Home Depot)
  • $18 toilet seat (Aubuchon)
  • $6 hinges (4) (Home Depot)
  • $4 door knobs (2) (True Value)
  • $13 towel ring (Target)
  • white shelf (left behind by previous owners)
  • candle (leftover from housewarming party
...for a grand total of: $208. Not too shabby. What do you think?

Modern Powder Room Redo

 Powder Room Redo
contributed by The DIY Diaries

What better way to end 2009 than on a high note with a room redo!  This is the post that’s been in the making for oh… going on about 2 months now.  Admittedly, I still have some accessorizing work to do, but for now, I at least wanted to post some photos.
The scary, 1990’s honey oak, bleh-I-can’t-stand-it befores:

Ugly faucet, be gone!!

Getting ready to demo.  We saved the mirror, no breakage!
powder room remodel 004 And after demo, we had new hardwood floors laced in where there were none under the vanity.  This was done by a professional.  We removed the toilet during this process.  After the floors were complete, Mason and his dad installed the pedestal sink, a new faucet and re-installed the toilet just in time for a house full of guests for Thanksgiving!

We also hung new beadboard around the bottom half of the walls, and painted it black.powder room redo 004

Then we cut all of the trim – both the chair rail around the top of the beadboard and also the baseboard with shoe, and installed it around the entirety of the bathroom and painted it with black semi-gloss paint + primer by Behr.  Love this product!
powder room remodel 017 The top half of the walls were painted Aristocrat White by Behr.
We installed a new round mirror from Hobby Lobby, a chrome light fixture from Lowe’s above the mirror, and bought new chrome bath hardware from Target.
Then we applied these trees to give some interest and personality on the top:

A little birdie told Mason that he’s excited that the half bathroom is almost done.  powder room remodel 006
And here is the (almost) finished product!  Still need to get some accessories.  But I was just too damn excited not to post.  ;-)

The trees go around the whole bath, and overlap at some points.  You can see the trees on the wall opposite the mirror in the second picture below.

We went with a square towel ring, which I thought was unique.  That was Mason’s suggestion actually!  One of the things I like the most about having a black & white bathroom is being able to change out the towels to match the season or my mood!

Say today for instance.  Turquoise blue sounds fun.
