Ballard Inspired Wall Plaque Tutorial

12 October 2011

Hey!  I am flying home from a family vacation today.
So, I am skipping the recipe party today!!  Sorry!
Please come back next week, I will have everything up and running!

Ballard Inspired Wall Plaque Tutorial

I guest posted on Craftiness is not Optional with this tutorial a few weeks ago as part of Jess'sThe Sincerest Form of Flattery series co-hosted by kojo designs...

The knock off I am sharing today is a woodworking project. I don't actually make many knock off projects. Here's what always happens to me... I see something at a store or in a catalog and think "I could make that", but then I never follow through or I figure out it would have been cheaper to just buy it. My knock off today, however, is a different story. I had the motivation (Jess asked me to guest post :) and I managed to knock off a $259 item for about $75. Ready to see it?

Here is the Ballard Designs Pruvost Wall Plaque...

Family Portraits on the Wall! (at last)

26 September 2011

When we went to Asheville this summer for the Shaw flooring competition...(please go vote there are only a few more days!  THANKS!) We also had my great friend Destinee take family pictures for us.  She is a fabulous photographer, and it has been fun to watch her business take off!  I thought I would share some of the pictures with you, and how I framed and displayed the first few pictures!

Anyway, I recently got an invitation from Kristen to share a way that I display my family pictures... And since I just got these new pictures from Destinee I thought "Seize the day" , well it wasn't quite that dramatic, more like.. "Crap I've gotta get this done before the post is due...!"

I wanted three large images in my entry, but I couldn't find the frames that just said "BUY ME".  And I went to about 5 different places.  Well, because I couldn't find anything I loved, I decided to change the plan for now, and just bought some $5 dollar Wal-world frames... that way if it didn't turn out great, then oh well.  But, I am really happy with how it turned out.

Where did I hang them?  I have this little "hall"  between our master bedroom and the guest half bath, on our main floor.  We used to have a bunch of family pictures there, but since we installed our wainscoting (and had Lydia)  I have yet to hang anything on the walls.  So, I thought I would put the pictures here.

I started with a quick coat of spray paint (Rustoleum's Lagoon in Satin -  I love this, I painted a table this color months ago and have yet to show you it... ya know, for a blogger, I am REALLY bad at blogging!) for the frames which were black to begin.

I thought it might be fun to ignore the wainscoting when I hung them, so here is the before and after. I had to hang the middle picture on a 2x4 block so that it hung flat!  I need to take pictures so you can see!

And because I like the little pink specter walking through this next image, I have to share it.  This is what always happens when trying to take pictures (and you should have seen all the sheets and pillow cases that she pulled out of the cabinet while I was doing this... and technically is still there 2 days later!  Whoops!)

Eclectic Plate Wall Tutorial

29 August 2011

Eclectic Plate Wall Art

For a while now I was trying to come up with an idea for my empty wall space in my dining room. I wanted something random & eclectic. I brainstormed a few ideas such as hanging antique colanders & antique kitchen utensils, which would still be a great idea, but then I was inspired by The Nesting place's random plate wall. Just the idea of an eclectic mix of white plates on a wall makes me a happy girl! So here is my adventure into hanging plates on a wall..

Hand Painted Flowers for Little Girls Room

17 August 2011

Big Girl Room With Hand painted Flowers

Prior to buying our current home two years ago, we lived in a modest townhouse that I had purchased on my own (i.e. - pre-Heelamonster in my life). After the Heela moved in, we decorated a few rooms here and there, including both of our daughters nurseries once they came along. Since we didn't find out our first child's gender, we had to decorate it in a neutral theme so we  I chose Classic Winnie the Pooh. I did most all of the decorating work by myself since the Heela was traveling alot back then and, if I do say so myself, it came out pretty darn good! (I hope to post more details on that project later, but here is a pic).

Glimpse of SweetPea's Nursery in Old House

Painting that room had been ALOT of work (granted I was 7 months pregnant at the time) so when we moved into our new house, I just had no desire to re-do that nursery or all that painting despite the fact that SweetPea was still in her crib. Besides, I knew it wouldn't be too long before she moved into a "big girl bed" and the decor would need to be updated at that time anyway. So we left the room in its natural, move-in state and I simply used the Winnie the Pooh accessories to make it liveable for a little while. Here it is in all its sad, pathetic and very plain glory....

Art Studio: Inspirational Space!

28 June 2011

Hi Everyone...

Laura here from Bright Bold and Beautiful! I am thrilled to be guest posting for Cassity on Remodelaholic. Today I am sharing my home office / art studio home renovation with you. This bright and cheerful room provides me with so much inspiration each and every day! In the center of the room I created a custom island with wide shelves. I designed it specifically to store my watercolor paper which is 26" by 40". It is movable with casters on the bottom, so I can move it around.

I created a large inspiration board to show my framed and unframed watercolors. I painted the pegboard the same Spring Mint color as the walls. Then I framed the pegboard with white trim for a finished look. This is the focal point of the room and the ultimate organizer.
The entire board measures 5 1/2 feet by 8 feet.

I use bull dog clips hanging on S hooks to display various works in progress.
Click here to see the wall before the renovation.

Over on the side of the room, I put in cabinets to store my supplies, with a dark teal/turquoise laminate top {which really looks like granite}.

My desk is made up of two IKEA Vika Artur trestles and a nice glass beveled edge top. I love my Jules swivel chair as well. Featured on the wall is my original watercolor dress painting.

Another IKEA purchase that holds and protects my prints is the Alex drawer unit on casters. I picked a beautiful light wood flooring. This cleans well {in case I spill some paint} and is functional with all the movable furniture in the room.

My best-selling "Summer Breeze" giclee on canvas brings color to the room. These are great to place in a stand on your favorite table, or hang on the wall.

Thank you Cassity for having me on Remodelaholic!

This project was contributed by one of our fabulous readers!  We love to share your projects with this great blogging community.  So, if you have projects from kitchen renovation ideas to small bathroom remodels, overhauled and repurposed furniture, spray paint updates you name it please send it in!

Silhouette Wall Art: Tutorial

Silhouette Wall Art: Tutorial

I started with a regular 4x6 photo that I printed at walgreens of each of my boys doing one of their favorite activities.  I then cut out each child and placed on my overhead projector.  I know its old school, but it works for me.   I used to go into my children's school and use the schools overhead until I found my own at a garage sale for $5! yeah.  Maybe your hubby's office has one you can borrow?  Use your resources and find one to use, or you can always buy one at office max.  I use mine all the time for projects.

Rustic Vinyl Wall Decal Art Tutorial

26 April 2011

I hope you noticed for the earlier post that we are having a giveaway for a $30.00 dollar gift certificate from Single Stones Studios Vinyl Wall Decals.  If you would like to enter the giveaway go here.

And, I was lucky enough to be able to be able to try out their product for myself and and so happy with the results:

Want to make one of your own?  Okay here is what I did, so you know where to start!

Supplies:
Beautiful Vinyl Want Decal from Single Stone Studios
2 Salvaged wood boards (found on bulk garbage pickup day!)
several old screws
Water Based Polyurethane

Tools:
Credit card (put them to good use!)
Cheap paint brush
Drill
Scrub Brush
Exacto Knife
Saw (for cutting boards)

Collect some old aged boards.  I found mine on the side of the road on bulk trash day!  No shame people!

Take a scrub brush and dry brush off the boards to remove dirt.  Sweep off.  If necessary you can use water and soap, but dry brush first, so the dirt doesn't just dry right back on there.  I was too impatient to deal with soap and water.

Next you want to seal the wood, so that the vinyl will stick to it, and not dirt.  I used a water based polyurethane,  two good coats, be sure to follow the instructions for drying time between coats.   (Don't dip directly into your gallon of polyurethane, you will get some dirt on your brush and then into your fresh poly if you do that.  Use another container and pour in a small amount to use, and don't return it to the gallon after ward!!- use it all up!)

Cut and arrange boards until you are happy with the look.

Collect some old screws to screw boards together.

Pre-drill holes for screw to avoid splitting the wood.  We screwed the boards into a horizontal piece of the same wood, that we placed on back.  We had one on top and bottom (forgot to photograph it sorry!)  Leave the screw exposed, that is part of the beauty!
Follow instructions that come with your vinyl, making sure you have gone over all of the art with a credit card or similar tool to adhere the glue properly.  Once that is done, position your art onto your boards and tape at top to secure in place.  Flip over and remove the paper backing.

Carefully turn it back onto the wood, and rub that baby with all your strength!!  You may have to do a little extra rubbing after you peel off the paper to make sure it is adhering well.  The polyurethane will help the vinyl stick (so I hope you didn't sick that step!)

Rub any loose spots... and admire for a just moment.

This is where I got a little scared!!  You see, I made spaces in the boards on purpose, but I was risking ruining the piece by cutting it all up.  So I took a deep breath and started trimming- but it worked, AND it looked so much better after.

Slowly and carefully cut the vinyl that spans between the gaps of the boards.  Just let the knife follow along the edge of the wood. If the vinyl pulls instead of cuts, replace your blade and I found that it also helps to start your cut just inside the vinyl (not from edge to edge).  Experiment cutting the small portions before moving on to the bigger sections, so you feel comfortable.

You can see in the picture above what a difference it makes to cut out the gaps.  Like it was meant to be together, no applied afterward!!

We found the perfect place for this in our entry (right next to my still unfinished stairs!!!)  To hang it we took the easy way out.  Simply screw a 2 1/2 inch screw right through the entire thing into a stud.  It is rustic with exposed screws already so you won't notice it at all!

 LOVE!!

Just for fun, do you have any cool vinyl project to show off?  Link up!
