Striped Wall Laundry Room

07 September 2011

Striped Wall Laundry Room

I just got back from a very fun trip to Ruby Tequila's (mexican food....yum) with my two friends, Kaitlin and Jessica.  We have had a very busy week and it will only get busier when we head home to Colorado tomorrow! One of the reasons our week was so hectic is due to the fact that we finished our laundry room.

I am in LOVE with this room, even though it is only a 5'x5' box. As I've stated before, we decided to paint the stripes that I have been obsessed with for quite some time. Bryan and I also completely repainted all of the trim, doors, and cabinets to make it look and feel brand new. I added some pattern, baskets, and a couple of framed prints to top the whole thing off. We were on a very strict budget for this, and I am happy to say that I only spent about $40 for the whole thing! It's not much, but it makes me a heck of lot happier when I have to do laundry now!

Here is the "before":

And the "after":

Love those stripes!

I made this curtain to hide the ugly drying rack in about 10 minutes with iron-on hem (aka my best friend). I love the fabric, I got it for like $4 at JoAnn's.

These prints are from TJMaxx. $10. Boom.

I also recieved this nice suprise in the mail today...

It's the Garden Issue! And guess what's next in our plans....that's right, our garden! Thank you, BHG, for making this girl's day.

Yay, love it!! Happy Spring Break!

This project was contributed by one of our fabulous readers! We love to share your projects with this great blogging community. Beautiful Stenciled Laundry Room

Beautiful Stenciled Laundry Room

Ok, here it is! I am so exciting to share this reveal with you today. This project took FOREVER, but a nice laundry room really does make the chore of doing laundry more enjoyable.

After Before

Can you believe it is the same room?

This is how we did it:

1. Clear everything out

Photobucket

2. Paint the walls
Color: Valspar Meadowlands Green

Photobucket

3. Stencil the walls using Olive Leaf Stencil Pattern Noelle
Color: Valspar Sunwash

(this was the tricky and time consuming part)

Photobucket

*Tips for stenciling*

1. Lightly spray the back of your stencil with a spray adhesive to prevent the paint from bleeding around the edges of the stencil and attach to the wall using painter's tape.

2. Use a stiff stenciling brush and apply paint using a dry brush technique.
(especially for textured walls, like ours)

3. Dab your brush in the paint, then blot the excess paint off on a napkin.
(this will keep your edges sharp)

4. Apply a thin layer of paint to stencil, dabbing the stencil with your brush.

5. Allow the first coat of paint to dry, and repeat as necessary before moving your stencil.

6. Move the stencil vertically, or horizontally, overlapping the pattern as you move around the room. Periodically check your stencil with a level to keep your pattern and stencil straight.

7. Repeat.

Photobucket

5. Continue Stenciling the walls
(it took forever)

6. Install New Flooring

Photobucket

7. Install New Pendant Light
(more on that next week)

and FINALLY THE BIG REVEAL!

Photobucket

Did you notice I did not stencil the back of the shelves?

I thought the pattern needed offset by a little solid, so I left the back of the shelves
and the wall where the door is located solid green.

I felt the pattern would be too overwhelming if every inch of the room was covered.

What do you think?

I think it is now my favorite room in the house...which is not bad for a laundry room!

Colorful Blue Laundry Room Makeover

Colorful Blue Laundry Room Makeover
Submitted by Design Share

My laundry room used to be a bit of an embarrassment....Plain white walls, florescent overhead lighting, storage shelves that didn't fit the space and clutter, clutter, clutter! It was overwhelming to go in there to do the wash, but go in I did, because I had to. The rest of my home is pretty much decorated to the nines, so it really didn't make any sense to NOT do the laundry room. Actually, I have long yearned for this space to be inviting and looking good, it was always just so much easier to close the door and forget about it! Well, not any more. In one weekend, I banished the boring and corralled the clutter into what is now a functional, bright and cheery spot to do a chore we ALL have to do. I just love the color in there now, and it really does make a daily chore that much more pleasant.

This wire shelving unit was waaay too big in here.

Reuse- Ladder into a Laundry Rack Idea

Reuse- Ladder into a Laundry Rack Idea by Bec

Hey there!  I'm Bec from Little Lucy Lu, and Cassity has kindly offered to let me guest post on her fabulous blog today.  I'm pretty new to the world of (real) blogging, so this is a huge honor, and I'm so thrilled to be here!

I started Little Lucy Lu shortly after my daughter was born as a way of tracking milestones and important events in her life, but over the last few months, I have kicked it into high gear and have become blog-obsessed!  My blog is a mash up of my life -- being a mom, wife, and kindergarten teacher,  my vintage-inspired style and craft projects, my shopping addiction, living in the country, a recipe here and there, and most importantly - my Little Lucy Lu!  I'd be so happy to have you stop in for a visit sometime!

A few weeks ago, I took an old wooden ladder and made it into a laundry rack ...

Renovated Laundry Room: New Flooring and Paint Job

Renovated Laundry Room:
New Flooring and Paint Job

Ok, you caught me.  The laundry room still is not 100% complete.  There's still some minor things we need to do and a few things we need to get.  Nonetheless, I'm ready for a reveal.  Just as a reminder, at some point, previous owners had used these two rooms for their dog breeding stuff.  (Check out this previous post for a few "before" pictures).  Obviously not something we were thrilled with, but when we bought the house, we knew someday we could turn it into something useful.  Fast forward 3 1/2 years and we are so pleased with how it turned out!  I just wish I had more "before" pictures for some better comparisons!

Here's the still-to-do/get list (doesn't include things like fill up the walls with artwork that are more long-term things):
*Putty holes & paint trim!
*Paint doors
*Baskets for shelves
*Shelves for above washer & dryer  (done!  see it here!)
*Doormats!
*Curtains

Now, be prepared for a lot of pictures....sorry for the poor picture quality for some of them....
First, another "before" picture (yes, I was too lazy to scan this so I took a picture of the picture)...it's the view standing in our kitchen looking out to the hallway - the door straight ahead leads to the garage.  Lots of wallpaper.  Lots of blue.  Wallpaper and blue seemed to be the main themes of the house.  And yep, those are ducks on the border.  Or possibly geese.

And the after - new flooring, wallpaper stripped, walls, doors and trim painted - door to garage removed due to the hallway added on to connect the old hallway to the new rooms (along with a peek at my daughter's jammie-covered bum):

Continuing forward:

Laundry Redo with Cabinets and More

Laundry Redo with Cabinets and More

contributed by Sabby In Suburbia

And That’s A Wrap!

Well, I’m happy to report that I’ve finally finished our Laundry/Mudroom Redo.  Actually, I finished before Christmas, as planned, but things happen…
Like Christmas. New Years. Major door replacement.
Yes, we had to replace the exterior door in the laundry room because it was so drafty that it was like having a non-existing window open!!!   Brrrrr!
That was messy, so I waited to share my “After” summary.
What a change a few months can make! (You can read about my little laundry room journey herehere and here.)
And just to remind you of what it looked like when I started….
BEFORE – Blah, boring and unorganizedIMG_5021
AFTER – Fresh, clean and put together!IMG_6426
BEFOREIMG_5024
AFTERIMG_6433-1
The transformation from paint alone was amazing (Behr called Aqua Smoke).  Once we hung up the new fresh white cabinets from Ikea, things really took shape.
IMG_6759-1
The cabinets allowed for SO much storage.  I actually have room to spare…for now.

The Bjarnum rack fit nicely the on the wall perpendicular to the washer and dryer, replacing the old white wire shelving.IMG_6418
So shiny.  So pretty.  SOOOOOO looks like it’s not level in this picture, but I promise it’s level in person.  Cross my heart.
IMG_6416
The new lighting really brightens the room up too!I might add some vinyl decal wall art under the rack for some interest in the near future.  Maybe one of the cute laundry sayings….or maybe something calming??  Ideas anyone?
This bench was a cinch to assemble and it fits perfectly between the new tall cabinet and shoe storage.   A little room left to the right for the hubby’s laptop case.
IMG_6443
These baskets were hidden under piles of clearance items at Home Goods and I snatched them up for $5 each!  We’re using them to store winter accessories for now.  One for the kiddos and one for the parents.
IMG_6444-1
Then I hung the hook rack over the bench.
I was going to take the coats out for the picture, but then I thought…It’s WINTER….It’s winter in CHICAGO!
Reality = Heavy Duty parkas!
IMG_6432
IMG_6431
Here are some other little changes…
I reused the stackable shoe storage that we bought a few years ago because…well, it works.  I posted about making some “calming” artworkfor this busy room too.
IMG_6436IMG_6445
This small space between the washer and dryer is the perfect spot for my folding step ladder.
IMG_6428
Yes, we still use plastic bags and the bag saver works well to keep them all tidy and ready to be reused.
The wall mounted mop/broom holder is one of my favorite new finds.  It’s a great way to keep things off the floor and in one spot and can also be used to hang dry the wet mop.
IMG_6420
A few weeks after finishing the room, I added a few vinyl decals here and there.
IMG_7815IMG_7820
They really finished off the room.
So what do you think?  Are you as in LOVE as I am with my new space?  I have to say that it sure does make laundry time a lot more enjoyable and everything has its own place.  Which allows me to breathe again.  Ahhhhhhh.
No kidding.
Wait, that’s kind of sad to admit huh?  Oh, well.  I’m a sucker for organization and label makers.  ;)
I’m off to do some laundry!
