Stretching A Small Budget; Big Girl Room

18 October 2011

Stretching A Small Budget; Big Girl Room

Rachel requested that her room not contain so much pink a couple months ago, so I've slowly turned it into more of an older girl area. Here is her room before:

If you want to see the WAY back before images and the transformation of the room from 10 years to the present; check out thisFlickr album.

The first order of business was finding a larger desk that didn't make the room feel smaller. I chose a solid pine top from IKEA, painted it purple and added white metal legs.

Next up, she needed additional storage for off-season clothing. As you'll see later our closets are painfully small due to their location under the stairs. I repainted a dark wood Lane cedar chest, reupholstered the bench and sprayed the pulls a sunny yellow.

Rachel asked specifically to change her bedding, and she chose this bright awesome print at IKEA. We are using her old quilt inside the duvet cover. The curtains are from the same line, Renate Slinga.

With Rach's help, we went through her shelves and chose only the things she really wanted to keep on display. I started a small bin to the right of the shelves for books she's already read, we displayed more pictures of her friends and our family and we left only a few puzzles and activities out.

The closet worked fine a couple of years ago when Rach was shorter. All her clothes hung on the empty bar you see in this image, so she could reach them. We decided to move Ruthie's closet into the main closet, and the striped ottoman holds Rachel's shoes.

All of her clothes are now in the far back of the closet, and I hope this encourages her to keep her closet floor more tidy! We'll see how that goes...

As much as possible, I reused items already in our house or her room. For example, the lamp below is her old one with a recovered shade.

Our old dining room chair came into the room for more seating, I pulled in my vintage frame for Rach to showcase her artwork and we left her tooth fairy pillow hanging in the hopes she'll hurry up and lose tooth #3!

The owl print over Rachel's desk is the first piece of artwork she's chosen herself. We bought it on Jackson Square from Katie Leese. The green fabric used for re-upholstery is Rose Bouquet by Heather Bailey. Both lamps in the room are from Target, as are the purple sheets and closet storage ottoman. Ruthie is an American Girl doll, but we needed to stick to a Target budget for her mini-closet! We bought two Our Generation Wooden Trunks at Christmas for the girls, and we couldn't be more pleased with how much they hold and how well they've held up to daily use.
The walls are painted in Valspar's Pink Whisper and the desk is Olympic's Purplicious. The chair and Lane chest pulls are Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch Gloss in Warm Yellow.

How to Keep Your Picture Level! A Simple Trick!

How to Keep Your Picture Level! A Simple Trick!

I know I am not alone when I walk by a framed photo or artwork on the wall, stop, walk back a couple steps, fix it "just a tad" so it isn't crooked, and continue on to where I am going again...am I???

Well, I had to find a solution...and I did!! I found this great tip to be a lifesaver with my own OCD "levelness".

All you need are:

1.) Thumb tacks

and...

2.) A hot glue gun!

After you measure and figure out where you want to hang your photo, glue on one tack in each of the bottom corners of the frame -

Hang your photo without pushing the tacks into the wall. Next, place your level above the photo -

Once it is level, push the the bottom of the frame placing the tacks into the wall. And....stand back and let those kids go crazy because those photos aren't going ANYWHERE!

Now, I can walk by the frames in my house and just keep walking. :0)

Little Girl's Pink Bedroom

contributed by Courtney at A Thoughtful Place

So I finally caved and gave into the pleas for an all pink bedroom. My four year old is head over heels in love with pink so I couldn't hold out any longer! I was soooooo afraid of it looking like a bubble gum room! Luckily I have a very patient husband who put up with a million trips to the paint store until we stumbled upon just the right one! The look on my daughter's face when she saw her finished room was priceless. And it's definitely a room that will grow with her. So despite my kicking and screaming to avoid a pink room, I can honestly say it's one of my favorite spots in the house! To quote my daughter, "It's pinkalicious!!!!"

Cute Pink End Table: Guest

17 June 2010

Jennifer at The Magic Brush made this little nightstand into a darling piece.  Check it out:

(before)

I saw her at a garage sale this weekend. Solid wood, heavy as heck... just a little abused and ignored.

I asked "how much?" and the lady said, "oh I don't know.... maybe $3".Ummmmm yeah.... I think I can cough that up.

I ran out of there carrying the end table on my back before she could change her mind!

I was so excited, I finished her the next day. Here she is in all of her new glory:

(after)

I brought her into Ava's room to photo for Craigslist.

Darn it Shauna! It does look stinkin' cute and I do want to keep it!!!!!

Keep it? Sell it? Keep it? Sell it? Oh the decisions I gotta make!

I think it looks great, I would keep it for sure!
What about you, do you have a place for it in your house?
