Screened Porch Envy! Outdoor Room

Well, as the weather is turning back to bearable outside, I have found myself hanging out with the whole family in our backyard until dark!  We have been going through a LOT of bug spray, and still have mosquito bites everywhere!

One thing that I miss most about our last house is the screened porch that we had and I would LOVE to have one here.  I used to just leave the door open and let the cats and kids roam in and out as they pleased.  But let's be honest, if our yard was bigger, I have ALWAYS wanted a playhouse studio that I could go and craft in or work... all by myself!  (someday!)

Justin and I have been considering building in a covered/screened porch back there since we moved here and have some ridiculously elaborate plans... that will most likely not happen!  If we did though wouldn't it be nice to have the all season kind of space... yeah, I think so too.  In fact yesterday, we were walking through the little sample sun rooms they have in the parking lots of the big box stores...dreaming... So I thought it would be fun to look at some pretty inspiration shots.

I love how modern these are, and yet the wood makes them feel very warm!  

And I love how the doors open up wide to make it an indoor/outdoor space!

Um... and I really want that house too. The stone one... like I explained here.

 Doesn't the picture above just feel cold?  

I can practically see my breath fogging up, and I think I need some hot chocolate!  

Oh, I can't wait for winter!

Great Molding Ideas for you Home

What a way to add interest to your room!  I dont' have a fireplace but... I am working on making a faux one  (or two) and Can't wait for them to be done!

Make Your Crown Taller Fast!

This particular post is a guest feature, but we have been doing this for the last 10 years on our homes and I LOVE this trick!  So worth it if you want large crown moldings for less $!

Make You Base Moldings Taller Too!

In our house, the builder used cheap window and door casing for all of the base, but we dont' have the cash to replace it all... but We do have really nice tall 6-8 inch base moldings (where we have gotten to it) for about .20 cents a linear foot.

Adding Crown to Your Kitchen Cabinets

I love this idea because it makes your builder grade cabinets look custom.  It brings up your eye, and adds height to your room!

Upgrading Plain Cabinet Doors

I know I show a lot of upgrades.  But honestly the reason I love upgrades so much is it just feels less wasteful to me... AND you get the look you want.  I think it is important to consider what can be done with what we have, before just chucking it the landfill!  Just my little soap box!  SORRY!

Using An Inspiration Photo to Design A Room

This weeks Tip Junkie post is about using inspiration posts to create the look you want.  So, I thought I would write a quick little post showing you how I would use in inspiration image!

Actually this is also a good way to help a person define their own personal style a little bit too... so I hope for those of you that don't know what direction to move for your own home that this might help out a bit.

We all do it, we find an image that just speaks to us...  

(insert smile! when you see the image)  I know, I know, I am going to use my Shaw room.

I love this room for many reasons, mostly it is just very me!

Okay, so you may have seen this picture before, it is the room Roeshel and I designed for the 30 day of HGTV flooring competition.  (YES, I would be SO thankful if you voted for us!)  

I think I will be able to break this room down really well for you all.  Using the next post I am writing on tip junkie as a guideline (it should post on this Wednesday, the link is for my last post...)

First break down each image.  This should be very specific!!  What in particular do you love, what don't you love? This is what I mean by breaking down the image, see below:

The walls:  

• The paint color, (Copen Blue by Sherwin Williams btw)
• The texture of the board and batten
• The Moldings!! Large crown, baseboards and windows are wrapped nicely.

The colors:

• Mostly neutral furnishings
• Accent colors pop throughout the room, on the pillows, the accessories, 
• That the chandelier is painted.  I LOVE the bright color!
• The rug ties them all together and helps the space to flow.  (just like I talked about here.) I LOVE this rug!
• The flooring is picked up by the colors of the frames and furnishings

The textures:

• I love the wicker chairs
• The stacked crate end table (I was so happy when I found those boxes!)
• The natural plants scattered throughout the space!
• The iron fencing!
• The handscraped flooring.

The found objects all mixed in!!!!:

• The iron fencing, used as art above the fireplace!
• The crates, re purposed as an end table
• The art easel used to display art 

The typography that is a repeated element throughout:

• The Subway Art - (tutorial at the link, something that anyone can make!)
• The ottoman and matching pillows
• The grain sack pillows
• Books used throughout
• The large letters on the wall ( you can see in the image below)

What I don't love:

The drapes, they are hung too low ( we only had those to work with so, we worked with what we had!)

I would have liked a more grand fireplace.  

Second Pick out your favorite elements...

And create a mood board with those element. 

Pick out your colors! and presto you know where to start

(Sorry, but I am skipping the third and fourth step in this post, since they are mostly about shopping etc... it is hard to show on a "pretend"  room! In case you are wondering why I can't count...my daughter skips numbers all the time when she is counting and it is just plain cute!)

Fifth: Don't be afraid to edit...

As you can see our list was sorta long above, not everything you like about your image needs to be incorporated!  You want to be able to breathe in this space.  So don't try to cram everything in!

Falling for You! Fun Fall Decorating Ideas

My favorite time of the year is fall!   And this past week the weather actually dipped down into perfect zone for the last 6 days.  We have spent the last three nights just playing as a family in the back yard after dinner until dark!

One Step Up! More Stair Inspiration!

I thought since today's earlier post was about my stair project.  It would be fun to see some beautiful stair inspiration.  Sometimes these pictures may seem too out of reach or daunting but the trick is to look for what you really love in the image and try to make it work for your home.  That is what Justin and I do when working on projects...  it works for us!  Give it a try!
