Pumpkin Roll and Recipe Link Up Party

19 October 2011

Okay, I thought that it was time to add another festive recipe to the mix..nothing earth shattering, just a pumpkin roll.  But technically I have had this recipe for 9 years, and I think I have only made it once ( I got it at a church activity)  So I thought it was time to give it another go!

Pumpkin Roll
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
2/3 c pumpkin
1 tsp lemon juice

3/4 cup flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp nutmeg

1 cup nuts (optional)

Filling:
1 cup Powdered Sugar
4 oz softened cream cheese
4 Tbsp Butter
1/2 tsp vanilla or lemon extract

Preheat oven to 375.  Prepare a 15 x 10 cookie sheet, by lining with wax or parchment paper, spray with cooking spray.  Prepare a thin kitchen towel by sprinkling powered sugar over the top.

Beat eggs for several minutes.  Slowly add 1 cup sugar.  Add pumpkin, combine,  add lemon juice and combine.

In another bowl combine dry ingredients flour, baking powder, salt cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg.  Fold dry ingredient into wet, until just combined  Pour onto waved paper on cookie sheet spread evenly over sheet.  Sprinkle with nuts if desired.

Bake for 15 minutes or until done.

Turn cake out onto sugared towel and roll up like a jelly roll.  Allow to cool.

Prepare filling mixture.  Un-roll cake spread mixture over it and re-roll.  Place in fridge and cool.

ALSO, I had to try and change it up a bit!  Chocolate Ganache I thought would do the trick?  Yes, because any excuse to add chocolate to a desert is probably valid... at least in my mind.

An hour or so before you are ready to serve, place roll on serving dish and top with chocolate ganache.  Allow chocolate to harden a bit before serving!

Fall Wall Decor Idea

I love decorating especially for seasons but in my house I don't have a lot of room to do that. I saw a display at Rodworks the other day and I just had to do it for one of my boring walls. This is obviously my fall decor and all I will have to do when we get to Christmas is change the wreath and the ribbon! I love it! What do you think?

Falling for You! Fun Fall Decorating Ideas

12 September 2011

My favorite time of the year is fall!   And this past week the weather actually dipped down into perfect zone for the last 6 days.  We have spent the last three nights just playing as a family in the back yard after dinner until dark!

But I thought it would be fun to show off some of the great fall projects we have featured here over the last few years...  (p.s. there should be some good Michael's coupons this week on the blog.. be sure to print yours out, I want to go buy some of their baskets!  50% off is a total gift!)

(wow, the stairs have come a LONG way!)

Fun Fall Sewing Project! Owl Pillow

08 September 2011

Fun Fall Project!
Owl Pillow

I had my adorable niece in town the last week of August!  She is going to college this fall!  It is so crazy to think that she is already graduated from high school.  And I have to laugh at myself because I so have those moments... you know the " I remember when you were 2 and you got into my makeup and crushed all my eye shadows all over the floor..."  Which she did!!

But it kinda cracks me up.  Because as a kid you roll your eyes at the reminiscing of old people... and now I am that old reminiscing person, and it is amazing how fast time flies, and how our concept of OLD changes... (I am so not old!)  Here are some pics from her visit!

Anyway since she is going off to college, we went shopping at the mall a lot (and my favorite thrift store! it was 75 cent day!  We both scored big time!) but when funds were running low we decided that it might be fun to make something and that something was an owl pillow.

I miss doing little simple crafts- we are in big project mode for our house.  I had a lot of fun doing it too!

Here is what my owl looks like!

We went through a ton of fabric...in search of the best!
'Liza (my niece) did a cute round sleeping owl in all sorts of colors.

I decided to stick to a fall colors theme.  I thought that it might be fun to use with my huge candy corn pillows, I used a lot fo the scraps of fabric that I had left over from my lighted ragamuffin garland (pictured below!)

Here is the owl coming together!

and sewn on...

Etta helped me stuff it, she was in love with it immediately!  (yes the house was a mess, I decided it was time to go through all the girls clothes and purge... We have a LOT of baby clothes!)

Here is Liza and Etta loving on their owls.

Would you be interested in a pattern?
Let me know.... if I get enough interest I will try to make one!

Fall Decor, Lighted Rag Garland Tutorial

25 September 2010

This is a post I did from last year, just re-posting cause we are sorta busy at the moment!  Hope that is okay!

Within my home I have two banisters.  It is fun to have them decked out for the holidays.  I had all sorts of spooky stuff for Halloween and when I took it down, it felt bare.

I wanted a fall inspired garland, but couldn't afford to buy one so I started to look around.

Here is what I found, and how I used it

2 Bleach stained towels
2 Strands of white Christmas lights
Several scraps of fabric in different fall colors (about 1/2 a yard of about 6 colors, slightly more of some)
Masking tape
Fall leaf sprays (optional)
Scissors
A bit of time (and a lot of hulu shows later)

The inspiration for this idea is a window treatment my friend Kim did in her daughter's room.  The hard part was coming up with a bendable "bar" type string.  That is where the towel came in.  I cut some old towels into 1/3's length wise.  Then sewed them end to end, (although I realize now that I could have just masking taped them together for those of you without a sewing machine.)

Step 1. I measured the banister and cut the (now sewn/taped together) towel piece to length.

Step 2 Then I rolled it up width wise, and secured the roll with masking tape.  See picture below:

Step 3.  Wrap lights around towel roll.  Make sure the lights work!!! Then divide the roll and string in half to help you get an even distribution of lights.  Secure with masking tape when necessary.
Step 4.  If you choose to have a leaf spray at the end tape that in place at both ends of garland now.
Step 5.  Take your fabric of choice and cut them into strips.  I cut mine into strips approximately 1/2" -1" wide and 10" to 15" inches long .

Then begin tying the fabric strips randomly onto the towel roll.  Until the towel is completely covered

Hang up where ever you would like.  And plug it in.  It is so festive and fun at night!  I love it!

Stuffing You Full of Ideas...; Thanksgiving Decor Ideas

23 November 2009

Day 5 : Thanksgiving Week

Today I am thankful for my faith.  I am not sure where I would be without it.  My faith is a daily part of my life.  My beliefs guide my daily decisions in every part of my existence.  I know am blessed because of my faith.  It lifts me, and helps to make sense of the hard things.  It helps me to know why I am here on earth, where I am going when I am done, and what I need to do to get there.

I am thankful to God for his beautiful plan of happiness for his children on earth.  For the Savior who gave us the Atonement so that God's plan for his children would be complete.  I will do all I can to make sure I am following the Savior's teachings daily in my life.  The greatest comfort is that when as humans we make mistakes, the Lord is there to lift us up, help us see the better path and guide us to it!

"As we express our gratitude,
we must never forget
that the highest appreciation is not to utter words,
but to live by them."
-John Fitzgerald Kennedy

Well, I can't think of a great transition so I will just jump right in, I had such a fun time googeling for Halloween decor ideas, I thought I should do it again for thanksgiving.  I don't have all the sources, but for those that I have I will list them!  (They are kind of a mix of fall ideas too, that I think work for thanksgiving too)

Table and Place Settings:

(most images are from Martha, as usual, after all she is the Queen of the land of Domesticity

These two images are my favorites.
The leaves in the hurricanes are fab.
The second image had the best idea, see how the plates are all on stands?  They went out and bought some cheap plates and bowls and hot glued them together to make a footed platter.  TOO COOL!  I am going to try this someday, if not for thanksgiving then something else.

Last two pictures found on Tip Junkie and Furniturestoreblog.com respectively.
