Beautiful Country Charm Kitchen And Dining Room!

22 August 2011

Beautiful Country Charm!
Kitchen And Dining - Before and After

Hey all, this is Cassity, I just wanted to share this kitchen with you from Erin. I love the details she added and the bright happy feel of the space.  And who wouldn't love this amazing antique ladder rack, that she used, I wish I had a place for one in my house!!  Tell me what you think of all her amazing hard work!

Here she is, in all her tract home glory! You probably have these same cabinets too. Stained oak! To me, yuck!!  Now, some people really like this look and if you do, I hope your not offended that I don't.  Everytime I walked in my kitchen, the grain in that oak just screamed at me!

In my home, you can see the kitchen from the living room, and I hated that! Because those cabinets were awful to me!

I tried to add some charm by bringing in my great Grandmother's table that I painted.  It helped, a little.  I just couldn't help feeling that those cabinets needed a dose of pretty.  I wanted so badly to paint them!  But, I was scared to death of that task.

But, I conquered those fears, and went for it!!  I won't lie, it was a monumental task!  But they are beautiful to me now!  Painted cabinets just make me smile!  Everytime I walk in my kitchen, I get this feeling of joy and pride that I did that!

From Oak to Beautiful White Kitchen Cabinets

From Oak to Beautiful White Kitchen Cabinets by Laura

I am so thankful to be here today at Remodelaholic, I was so excited when Cassity asked me to come on by!
My name is Laura and I have had a small interior decorating business since 2004.  I work on a part time basis because my “real” job is taking care of my family, my husband, two fun daughters ages 8 and 10 and a goofy dog named Bailey.

Finding Home is about the journey we are all on, the goal of making our houses feel like a home.  But part of that journey is the people and communities that we are interact with everyday, so I blog about that sometimes as well.  I hope you will take a moment to stop by and find out a little more about me.
Today, I am going to share with you a kitchen renovation I did for a client.  This project was part of a whole house re-do.  You can read about the living room and family room transformations as well.
When we got to the kitchen, we knew we were not going to do a total gut job, there was plenty that was salvageable – mainly the cabinets and the flooring.  The first thing that we did was remove all of the wallpaper and painted the walls a soft grayish green.
This is an image of how much wallpaper there was…

Here is another view, and her sweet dog Maggie.  This also shows the flooring that we kept, the homeowner just gave the grout a real good scrubbing.

Here is the same view after…

Beautiful Farmhouse Dining Table

05 May 2011

Beautiful Farmhouse Dining Table by Shelby

Hey everyone! It's Shelby from over at honeysuckle. I am so honored to be guest posting here today! I am new to blogging this year and was super flattered to be asked to share a project on a big, fabulous blog like Remodelaholic! Thanks, Cassity!

Blogging has been a fun, creative outlet for me and a great motivation to start checking off projects from my endless 'to-make' list! Over at honeysuckle, you'll find a place where I express my sense of design, share my adventures in thrifting, spotlight my diy and craft projects, pass along decor inspiration, try new recipes, and document all things lovely. I hope you'll come on over and say hi!

The project I'm going to share with you today is our homemade farmhouse table. This table was born out of frustration of looking for over 9 months for an 8-10 person dining table without a $500+ price tag! I scoured craigslist, made frequent trips to goodwill and other various thrift stores, and even looked at furniture store sales. But with no luck and an ever-growing frustration, my husband decided to try his hand at building us one. Sidenote: this was one of his first-ever building projects, so this can be (and has been) accomplished by beginners in wood-working.

What started as a pile of wood...

...ended up as a gorgeous farmhouse-style table.

A bit about our process: we found basic plans for building a similar table on diy-extraordinaire, Ana White's website, but we changed the style and dimensions to fit what we had in mind. We made our way to Lowe's to purchase all the materials, and then began our table-building adventure!

Pedestal Style Kitchen Table, Cut Up And Turned Into A Coffee Table.

11 April 2011

Pedestal Style Kitchen Table, Cut Up And Turned Into A Coffee Table.

I was too excited to wait until next week to share this little project I have been working on all weekend.

For a few years, I have been searching for a pedestal style kitchen table to cut up and turn into a round coffee table for my family room.

I have a lot of little kids, the idea of a coffee table with no sharp corners makes me happy.

It was going to be a tricky redo, because, as it turns out, people don't want to sell their nice wood tables for cheap. Even thrift stores would mark them much more than I ever wanted to spend on an item that I was ultimately going to cut up and paint. I just happened to be driving past a local thrift shop that sets of its goods out to suck you in, and there it was.

A pedestal table. I stopped on a whim, and checked the price. $75. I was hoping they would come down on the price, when the guy running it said that everything was 50% off that day. Sweet! With tax, it ended up being just under $40, which I was more than willing to pay.

Now, this puppy isn't solid wood. The pedestal is, as are the feet, but the tabletop is just veneer. Which, for me, is fine. This isn't an heirloom piece. The great thing about it being MDF on the inside is that it is a great deal thicker and sturdier than an all wood table, which means my kids can lean on it without fear of tipping.

I didn't get a good "before" pic, because my hubby decided to just take the top right off of it almost as soon as I got it out of the car. So here is a before of the pedestal at least:

with some of the pedestal cut off. He got it all cut, the screws replaced, and then when we got it inside, we decided to cut it down a little bit more, so it isn't as tall as it is here:

Refinished Dining Room Table and Chair Re-upholstery Tutorial

Refinished Dining Room Table and
Chair Re-upholstery Tutorial
Special Guest Feature by

I'm thrilled to be here at Remodelaholic today to share my dining room and a
simple upholstery tutorial with you!

I'm a new blogger over at Natty by Design where I share the ins and outs of my
furniture refinishing business and the S-L-O-W transformation of my new home.  I
thrive on the adrenaline of a good challenge and I have a passion for learning new things.
I am an incurable DIYer. If I can do it myself - then I'm going to do it by myself.  So without further ado, my dining room...

Prepare yourselves for the fabulous before and after of my table and chairs!
Nothing is more exciting than a great "before and after"...agreed?

This picture doesn't do the
complete nastiness of the table justice.  The previous owners had two very large
dogs that had done some serious damage to the legs and a couple of the cushions.
Something else you can't see are the atrocious seashell details on the table legs - my
husband, Zac, took the grinder to those.  I wasn't digging the heart shaped
backs either, so I made a template out of cardstock similar to the Pottery Barn chairs
here and he cut them out with his trusty
jigsaw.

Ahhh, so much better.

Kitchen Table Redo With Sheet Music

26 October 2010

Kitchen Table Redo With Sheet Music
contributed by House of Belonging

 The Nester says, " It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful"

 {and I say}

"If you don't succeed the first time, try, try again. If still you don't succeed, nuts to it!"  LOL ;)
this is not my original quote just one that came to mind:)

{ the beginning }

what started out being my {inspiration} the book that is...sanding table...laying out letters

RE-sanding over painted on letters...
{ this is why you will still see all of the dust under my dining table in the finished picture...lol! }

I painted the legs Heirloom White that I had Home Depot mix in latex paint...instead of a spray can...{ I am not good at spray painting....sorry blogland:)
I painted the edges of the table in this color that I found on {Cowboy} Phraseology...she painted her sweet new baby girls bed this color..I loved it.

{ Behr Cloud Burst }

I didn't like the words...I know...I am sad about that:(
So the table lived there in a state of anonymity for almost a week.

 Nikki ROLLED her eyes...I know Nikki...I saw it :)
It came to me...Mod Podge!!  For a genetically dysfunctional crafter like myself
Mod Podge is like chocolate when your are PMSing..REALLY!

I had some sheet music from ... yes a thrift store... so I laid it out randomly
and Mod Podged to my little hearts content.

I glazed over the whole table and then gave it a good coat of MP

Just a few pictures form different angles
THEN
yesterday we took down the bambooish blinds { they are nice in summer to keep the heat out though }
and immediate happiness filled the area...yeah!

{The picture below shows the blinds}

{ Phase I of Eat in Kitchen }

 {my favorite part of this picture collage?  BLESS THIS HOUSE }

The pictures above are without the blinds... can see how much " happier" it is?
I am playing with some chair decor...I am going to tie on fabric just not sure what " kind " of fabric yet.  I used some muslin I had just to see what it would look like.  I am leaving it there for awhile to get a feel for it first.

This is PHASE I of the Eat In Kitchen....whew!

Now for the painting of the walls....I DON'T think I will be stenciling any letters anytime soon...LOL!

Wink Wink ;) ;)  I DO have a couple of FUN things I am going to try though...go ahead...roll them eyes!!  Ain't nothin a little REDO won't fix..

Sur La Table

19 July 2008

I have a few house updates to share.

Actually it has more to do with furniture, but they go in my house so.... anyway, a few years ago I got our family table from my brother Rand. This is the table that we ate at, morning, noon and night at as a kid with my six brothers and sisters and my parents. Before that, it had been my father's parents . I LOVE this table. It is huge, but it is soooo wonderful.

The table itself had seen better days. In fact, I remember when I was 10 or 11 I realized the the finish had softened so much I could scratch it off with my fingernail. So, I spent a good half hour scraping designs into the top. I specifically remember a nice bird cage design that really tickled my fancy. But alas, at 27 I did not like the bird cage motif quite as much!

So I started refinishing it, which started and seemed to drag out, and out, and out, beyond belief. But at last it is done. And we have pictures to prove it, and a space to park our car again!
