Living Room Makeover From Better To Best

23 August 2011

Living Room Makeover From Better To Best

Immediately I connected with this house because of the open floor plan and good placement of the formal and informal areas, large bedrooms and beautiful neighborhood. This home had loads of character but needed much love and with at least 2700 square feet of shiny white ceramic tile (the house has a total of 4000 sq feet) that had to be removed, it is obvious why few were up to the task. We lived in this house with white tile, bad fixtures and ten, yes ten, tacky metal floor to ceiling pillars in our living room for six years before we hit the ground running with a six month remodel that made this house our home.

I have been trying to post a group of before and after photos of our home each week featuring a different room or area. This week i feel that I need explain my way through the living room because at first glance it can be difficult to spot the changes that I found absolutely necessary. Of course we took out the white tile surround below the mantle, took away the white ceiling fan, removed the carpet and removed the mirror above the mantle (that was set into the wood), I got rid of the dark red paint and of course updated the furniture.

Before

We painted the walls and ceiling a warm gray and added black honed granite to the fireplace surround. The entire house, except for the bathrooms and laundry and mud room have these fabulous 5" solid hickory plank flooring accented with area rugs.

From Bathroom Vanity And Book Shelves To Entertainment Center

From Bathroom Vanity And Book Shelves To Entertainment Center

Our last house had a built-in entertainment center, which was great!  We loved the fact that we never had to buy a unit to hold our electronic equipment.  However, it wasn't such a great thing when we moved!  We had a 52 inch TV that sat on our coffee table for months until we came up with an inexpensive solution for holding our TV.

We wanted more than just a console to hold our TV.  We wanted something that was aesthetically pleasing and that would hide a lot of our kids' toys and games.  One night, I found inspiration as I was looking through Craigslist ads, and came up with a solution that would meet all of our requirements.

First, we found these hideous bookcases on Craigslist for $60 for three!

Okay, so they're not THAT hideous...and please don't be mad at me if you have these same bookcases in your house!  The plan was to use two of these on each end of the TV compartment.

To hold the TV, we ended up purchasing an unfinished 60 inch bathroom sink base at a home improvement store.  Here it is while my husband was modifying it:

Staging A Bookcase Beautifully

Staging A Bookcase Beautifully by Stacy

Howdy ya’ll!

My name is Stacy and I blog over at The Precious Little Things in Life. I am giddy with excitement honored to have been asked by Cassity to guest post here on Remodelaholic. I’ve been an avid follower of this blog for over a year now and have gleaned so much knowledge and inspiration from it. Before we begin, here’s a little run down of who I am and what my blog is all about. I was born and raised in Texas and I lived there up until August of last year, at which time my husband left his secular job and accepted a church planting/pastoral position in North New Jersey. We packed up our belongings, said good-bye to loved ones, and drove cross-country with our three young children to begin a new and exciting chapter of our lives. I started my blog in order to stay in touch with family and friends in Texas, but it has since evolved into a wonderful creative outlet for me, a forum in which to share with others that which I am most passionate about: serving the Lord, loving my husband, homeschooling my children, and decorating my home. We are currently renting a Victorian Style house built in the 1920’s and have had to come up with many creative and ingenious ideas to spruce it up, while staying within our budget and respecting rental property restrictions.

My husband and I have been busy the last few months, working hard to give our master bedroom a much needed face lift. One wall of our bedroom is occupied by two Ikea Billy Bookcases (joined together by screws) that were handed down to me by my sister. They were taken apart and stored in my garage in Texas for a while before we moved, then transported 1,600 miles to New Jersey in a tightly packed Uhaul truck. They were in serious need of some TLC. Not only that, but we were not happy with overall appearance of the bookcase arrangement. It was far too busy and colorful. In our bedroom, we are going for what I call a cool and crisp look. Simple, clean, and bright. It was clear to us that the rainbow effect created by the colorful book bindings was making it impossible for us to achieve this overall look. Add to that the less than appealing appearance of some of the books and we had a real challenge on our hands. (we have many old well-loved books)

Here is a picture of the bedroom so you can get an idea of the color pallet we are working with and the overall feel of the room.

Vintage Crates as Bookshelves Idea

05 April 2011

I love this idea, I had to document it.  The cool thing about this project is that it could be recreated really easily.  Bulk trash day is coming up and that means old wooden fence posts will be waiting around every corner here in Texas...  I think I need to do some trash pickin'!

Do you guys like this idea?

This project was contributed by one of our fabulous readers!  We love to share your projects with this great blogging community.  So, if you have projects from kitchen renovation ideas to small bathroom remodels, overhauled and repurposed furniture, spray paint updates you name it please send it in!  Thanks for reading Remodleaholic!
