I Phil Ya Man! Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches Recipe

06 January 2010

Time for another recipe, don't cha' think?

We went to our good friend's house a year or so ago for dinner and they whipped this out in about 10 minutes flat.  Now this is one of our go to quick dinners that never disappoints.

Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches (healthier version!)
 approx 4 servings+

1/2-1 Green Bell Pepper
1/2-1 Small Yellow Onion
6-8 Button Mushrooms
10+ slices Deli Sliced Roast Beef
3/4 c Mozzarella Cheese (or any cheese you really like, I just happen to always have Moz.)
Whole Wheat Sandwich Rolls

Start by slicing the bell peppers and onions into long thin wedges.
Then spray your saute pan with cooking spray, set on medium heat, add the veggies.
While they start sauteing cut your button mushrooms
(**hint, I use my egg slicer for mushrooms and it makes perfect fast cuts)

When the onions start to get a little color
add your mushrooms and saute them til they are almost done, and look like this:

While they are sauteing, chop the sliced roast beef.
Add to the veggies at the end, just to heat through.

Then top with mozzarella cheese and let it melt.
(add a lid if you need to, not too long)

Toast your rolls (optional) and Serve!

(My friend Dest, who originally made this for us is also a fabulous photographer check out her site!)

What are you having for dinner?

Yes, this does look really GOOD... but it ain't no Philly cheese steak! Deli roast beef... mozzarella cheese... whole wheat rolls... you'll never find on a real Philly Cheese steak.

We lived in Cleveland many years ago and they had cheese steaks that just had the name. My daughter now lives in up-state NY and she and her husband always make sure they save one night to have Philly Cheese Steaks before they head home.

:) Most kindly :)

yum yum but yes, if you're at pat's or gino's in south philly, you'd definitely have it with "whiz" instead of mozzerella :)

I never would have thought to use deli roast beef, but I love the idea of that. So easy! I think I'll use provolone on ours. Thanks for the recipe!
