Rugs for the Living Room, looking around...

20 January 2011

Shopping for a Living Room RUG
by Remodelaholic

One of the things we are going to need for our new living room is a rug.  A large one at that, and if you have ever looked for large rugs they can be SO expensive... Luckily, I saw on my friend Autumn's blog that she got a great deal online.   She also gave some great advice that saved me from picking an awful color combo, because my screen colors were not set up the same.  READ THE REVIEWS!  So, I decided to shop around a bit and found A MILLION different options, which you will see.

The great news the prices are really great too.  Because I also wanted a wool rug... WHY?  I love the natural qualities of wool, that I learned about years ago in my textiles class.... I got online and researched a little for you so you can hear about it too, (this post is not sponsored by anyone by the way... I just thought you might want to know why and how I came to my decision)  I found this info on a wool carpet site... FYI, I can't remember where, sorry I don't have the source!

Why Wool?
Wool is durable, resilient, affords comfort and safety - and wool is a renewable resource! Wool fibers are naturally superior to synthetic fibers, as well as longer lasting, inherently flame retardant and resistant to dirt and crushing.

Performance
SUPERIOR TEXTURE RETENTION & RESILIENCE... Due to the natural crimp that is inherent in wool fiber.
SUPERIOR WEAR -- Ask previous wool purchasers... Wool looks better longer and "Wears Gracefully".
NATURALLY SOLID & STAIN RESISTANT... Protection that won't deteriorate like the temporary additives that are used on synthetic fibers.
SUPERIOR DYE FASTNESS... Due to wool's natural ability to take in dyes.
NATURALLY FIRE RETARDANT and wool is self extinguishing. Wool is the fiber of choice for casinos and airlines for this reason alone.  (Acutally this was accidentally tested by me in real life, I had a wool purse sitting on my counter top and was showing a girl I used to work with how to make mac 'n' cheese and the purse got pushed onto the burner and it just self extinguished!  Kinda cool- I moved the purse right away BTW!)

Value
Slightly higher initial cost massively offset by product longevity and ease of maintenance. WOOL CARPET ACTUALLY COSTS LESS!!!!
WOOL CARPET ADDS VALUE and is the ULTIMATE STATEMENT OF STYLE, SUCCESS, AND COMFORT.
WOOL IS WARMER IN THE WINTER AND COOLER IN THE SUMMER. Wool naturally feels better, is more resilient, and helps moderate temperature and humidity in the home by absorbing and releasing moisture as needed.
Wool's natural soil and stain resistance allows for wool to require LESS CLEANING THAN SYNTHETICS.
Wool is a renewable resource and is biodegradable. Wool is a way to be kind to Mother Earth. WOOL IS GREEN AND IS RECYCLABLE.
Comfort
WOOL'S SOFT & NATURAL FEEL to the hand and beauty underfoot simply cannot be achieved with any synthetic fiber.
Wool is a NATURALLY DELUSTERED FIBER that is appealing to the eye and allows for a soft and comfortable appearance on the floor.
Wool's natural luster and gentle light reflection characteristics give a home or office an ELEGANT AND PEACEFUL BACKGROUND.
Quality
All HIBERNIA WOOL CARPETS ARE CAREFULLY TESTED for consistency, performance, and overall adherence to strict product specifications.
Our yarns are TRIPLE SCORED to enhance soil resistance and extend the life of the carpet.
HIGH TWIST YARNS equal higher performance and all HIBERNIA fabrics utilize higher than normal twist multiples to insure customer satisfaction.
All HIBERNIA carpet products are PERFORMANCE TESTED and TRAFFIC RATED to insure performance and proper utilization (see product sheets).

Okay, that is why I want wool.  And I went "window shopping" via the same un-named site, although I have a million links over there so I am sure you will find out where I was shopping but here are a few rugs that I love.  I picked one, it is in the mail, I can let you guess

I am a little nervous about my choice, I LOVE the pattern, I just hope it doesn't date immediately... because I went a little less traditional. which I was leaning toward to make sure it would last.  BUT I feel like it will keep the space modern and sorta eclectic, which I like.  I would love to hear your guesses... and when I get it, I will show you all!

Here are some of the rugs I really liked... okay a like billion, 20 to be exact, I know I couldn't stop myself.

Which ones do you like?
Do you hate them all?
What are your thoughts?
Guess which one I bought (technically I don't have the right color-way version in this post cuz I bought the 2nd to last rug and forgot to save the image...BUT it's family member is on the list)!!!

My favorites are 4 and 9. Love the blue in 4, but if you ever thought you might get tired of that as your accent...then 9!

I know, rugs are difficult!! (Which is why many of my floors are bare). I LOVE #2 and #5.

    #7 (blue) was the one that got me to click on its link;

    #2 is cute too.

And, in theory, I like the houndstooth ...

Recently I bought a "patchy" brown and beige rug but once I laid it on the floor I was dismayed by both the rug and hardwood floors. Together, they did not compliment each other. They looked quite bland together. Maybe it was the colour in the rug? Maybe it was my mood? I dunno. I have to replace it eventually.

I like 4 and 9! I am looking for rugs for my doors(front and back), laundry room and maybe kitchen! I have been looking at indoor/outdoor rugs because you can just hose them off!! We have 2 indoor dogs (and 2 boys) so I want it to be easy to wash!!! Can't wait to see what you picked!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the arches you're adding...I don't think it really breaks up the room but accents them!!!

I tend to prefer more modern rugs from places like west elm or chiasso. But for some reason I like picks 2 and 4.

8 and 15 Are my favorites by far!!! 15 made me do a double take with those really thin-lined shapes, maybe a conversation piece? Thanks for sharing:) would love a visit and a follow back:)

FYI, bought rug #1 and it is dark brown and muted tones of all the colors. Not a bright color to be found on it. It's not kakhi either, VERY dark brown. Save yourself the time of having to ship it back :) LOVE many of your choices 4, 5 and 11 are beautiful. Good luck!
