Making a Screen Door for Your Pantry

10 May 2011

Making a Screen Door for Your Pantry by Ashley

Hello all you fantabulous readers! This is Ashley from The Handmade Home. I couldn't be more thrilled to be here, and when sweet Cassity asked me, I was so excited. In case you have no clue who in the bloggy world we are, we're also the artists formerly known as Pure + Lovely: a site that documents our family's progress + crazy fun as we forget the "rules" and simply go for it, with DIY design, art, room redos, and inspiration...that is, when we're not enjoying the challenge of parenting three little munchkins. As lots of you know, sometimes that's all a job in itself. {Whew!}

Today, I have the fun honor of sharing a little about our fun screen door project we just tackled, as a result of our kitchen revamp. We had a basic, kinda ho-hum kitchen. And we decided to take a leap of faith, and make a change. There was nothing wrong with our kitchen. We just wanted to switch it up a bit, and make it feel more...us.

TADA! We had some kind of a gross builder's grade door going on in the pantry department. And the brass doorknob was kind of bumming me out {and burning my corneas} every time I looked at it. So we decided to give it a little somethin' to breathe some character into our cookie cutter bungalow.

And we couldn't love it more.

Newly Painted And Reorganized Pantry
contributed by Counting It All Joy

I was very inspired by the House of Smiths pantry redo, so I decided to tackle my own. I did not have very much money to spend so I tried to use as much stuff as I could that I already had. First I took everything out! My husband was really excited about that part...

Here are some before pics ...

Newly Organized Pantry Closet: Guest Remodel

25 August 2010

Decor Chick has been calling things to order.  Namely in the pantry closet where there was much need of it.  Who dosen't need a little order and tidying up in that department anyway?  See how she accomplished great things with a little order in her pantry closet.

Well, well well!  I never thought I could love a pantry as much as I do now.  Actually, I never thought I would even give the pantry a makeover.  After all, it’sjust a pantry.  But boy oh boy, how life changing this makeover was.  Seriously.
Let me first give props and a BIG thank you to my Dad.  He really is a brilliant guy.  Now you all know where I get it from.  Haha, JUST KIDDING.  Sort of.   :)  Anyway, he helped me a lot with this project and is the mastermind behind the new shelf/carousel design.  I will show you them later, and I will also write a separate post just about these shelves.  They are that awesome.  And if you decide you want some, which I know you will, he is even selling them now and can ship you some!  Update: Click HERE to read the post with all of the information about the carousels.
Ok, so here is our pantry before.   I love embarrassing myself.
We don’t live like pigs I promise.  And no, we didn’t trash the pantry so I could get some good before shots.  Sadly, it’s been like this for forever.
So instead of me showing you the afters right away, I’m going to take you on a little journey first of what we did to the pantry. Don’t hate me.
First off, I removed everything.  Put all your stuff in boxes and not all over your kitchen counters.  That’s what I would have done originally if my Dad didn’t make me get a box.  But yes of course he was right.
When the pantry was emptied my dad put up beadboard wallpaper for me.  I helped a little by smoothing out the occasional air bubble. :)  I already had a roll of it from another project, but I did end up having to buy 1 more roll for $15 so we could finish the top of the pantry.  While he was wallpapering, I did touch up our shelves with paint. :)
Sorry, in that last photo the paper was still wet, but that’s the only one I took with the whole pantry wallpapered.
Here is the wallpaper I used and got it from Lowe’s.
Next up came the installation of the amazing shelves/carousels my Dad designed and made.  Here is a picture of what they look like.
Don’t let the picture fool you.  These beauties are 20 inches in diameter!
I actually did install them, with supervision of course. :)  It was very easy though.
I drilled all of the holes first.  Here they are after they are installed.
Aren’t those awesome?!?!  They aren’t your typical “lazy susans,” trust me.  Anything made by my Dad is top notch.  They aren’t plastic, won’t bend or wobble, and spin so silently and smoothly.  You can put a TON of weight on these and it won’t affect anything.  They really are awesome.
Ok, so now what you’ve been waiting for!  Here are some pictures of the new pantry.
YES!!  Can you believe that’s the same pantry?  It’s like total peace going in there now.  I know that sounds strange, but everyone operates better when things are neatly organized.  I need these shelves in every cabinet in the house now!
I’ll show you some more afters in a second.  I just wanted to show you the cuteness I had to add to the pantry first. :)  I really LOVED the way Shelley at House of Smith’sorganized her pantry makeover.  It’s just beautiful and so I used a few of her tips for organizing.
I did get the same big glass canisters from Wal-Mart, and all of the other new glass jars and plastic containers you see are from Ikea.  They are all really cheap.  About $6 for the big ones at Wal-Mart, and anywhere from $2-6 at Ikea.  Then I bought some Cricut vinyl for $9, cut out pieces with those squiggly scissors (sorry, I know they have a real name but I forgot), then used the chalk pens (bought at Michael’s) to write my label with.  Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick also did this with her adorable new jars for all of their cereals!
I really love those tall skinny containers.  They are airtight and currently house our cereal, cheez-its and almonds. :)
The pasta and bean canisters…
I didn’t know how I would like having it all seen, but I LOVE it!!  Besides it looking pretty, I love knowing how much I have of something now without digging through all of the packages.  I always seem to buy a pack of spaghetti when I go shopping, but now I know I won’t need to for a long time. :)
I hung a wreath in the pantry, ummm, just because. :)  I had gotten it at a resale shop and wasn’t using it anywhere yet, so I thought this was perfect!
Here are some more after photos!

So what do you think of this makeover?  I seriously am in love with the pantry now.  The new spinning carousels really provided a LOT of extra room.  The top carousel and the bottom carousel hold the taller items like appliances I don’t use every day, 2 liters, dog food, etc.  Really awesome.  Oh, and hubby organized the canned foods.  :)  This was really an all around team effort project!
One of my goals was to eliminate as many boxes as possible.  I never really thought about it, but they do add a lot of clutter.  Of course I couldn’t buy a jar for every single boxed item, so I just put those on the right hand side of the pantry.  We don’t eat a lot of boxed foods anyway, so there isn’t much.
Another before just for giggles…
And after…
So how is your pantry lookin’ these days?  I hope you have been inspired to fix it up a bit if it needs it.  I promise it really will change your life!  And when I went grocery shopping yesterday, I spent $50 less than what I normally would, and it was even my “heavy” shopping day.  I really think it was because I knew what we already had.
I wished the beadboard wallpaper was showing up better in my after photos, but it’s the lighting in there.  It really looks great in real life. :)
I will be following up with a separate post about the carousels.  They are so cool!  If you can’t wait for the post and are interested in getting some for yourself, email me at emily@decorchick.com. :)
UPDATE – Please click HERE to read all about the pantry carousels and info on how you can get them.
Great job!  Those turn tables really make that pantry closet corner a lot more efficient.  Would you like to do the same thing in yours?

House Doctors

06 December 2008

When Justin and I move into a house we usually take our time on projects, especially major projects. Mostly, we don't like spending more money than we have, but we also just feel our way onto projects. Meaning - before we get into the house I will draw a detailed furniture layout and storage plan, (and no I'm not kidding) We put those things where I planned them, and then spend the next few months moving them around, till we find the problem areas.

I am a big "form follows function", type of girl. This used to drive my college professors NUTS! They would be telling me to experiment and make it artistic and all that stuff blah, blah, blah. (I did love my teachers though) BUT, in my mind I am thinking "There is no place to store your shoes in that house" or "If I was having a dinner party, there MUST be a guest half bath that doesn't function as a private bathroom, so they can't see my ..uhem.. ointment" OR "That I simple could not store any food in that tiny kitchen, they must have a pantry." I am just far to logical- I could never work with Frank Gehry, although I love and admire his work!!

I started drawing house plans when I was about 8. I used to draw my dream room, both floor plans and elevations. I remember one clubhouse in particular ( couldn't find the plans, or I would have shared them) The storage plans were very detailed. I drew elevations of drawers for colored pencils, another for crayons, and third for paper, (all labeled) and of course I would need a cubbie for the stapler and tape dispenser, and there would need to be doors covering all these cubbies, cuz who wants to see the mess. In fact, I just have to show you two of my favorite floor plans that I drew as a kid.

My 10 yr old self's Dream Room
You'll notice the little labeled boxes for all my important things. Also, over my desk, the special balloon with a stuffed bunny rabbit in it, that was a party favor at Danielle Frank's B-day party and it made quite an impression! A smiling sink, because everyone needs one of those. It seems I would have be sleeping on a board, but at least I have a few pillows and a wall mounted T.V.(I was probably watching Full House)... You get the point.

A Tree House Plan
I actually dreamt about this, and "had to put it down on paper" the next morning. This is a composite of elevations, floor plans, roof plans and a perspective. Man, what talent! I was really tempted to frame this and put it up at senior exhibit as my humble beginnings, back in the day, but I don't think the department head would have been as impressed!

Ah, reminiscing is so,.. FUN.

But, on with the blog...

So our first main project is the Laundry Room/ Pantry. I all of a sudden feel like such an adult, I have an actual pantry. I am a bit of an obsessive food storage shopper- and I like my pantry to look like a grocery store. I need to have a minimum amount of the regular items I use, ( I hate last minute grocery store runs) The cans must be lined up and in logical order... Wait, maybe I have obsessive compulsive disorder?*** But never you mind! If you need to borrow brown sugar, of course I have it, and I know exactly where it is!

There was a lot of wasted space in our laundry room. I cannot stand having wasted storage space, truly one of my biggest pet peeves. Now you should be beginning to understand my need for order. We have a local Habitat for Humanity Restore. I LUFF IT! I get great deals and feel like I am helping those in need because the proceeds go to local building projects and I am recycling.

So far the project has been under 150.00 and we've done a ton! But we are not done yet. This is a "mid-project" post.

The first problem is the door. It opens into the Laundry room, and must be closed in order to get to the washing machine, directly behind the door. Just frustrating!! Also, we are in and out all day, so I would rather just not have the door. But of course there are occasions that I would like to hide the room. The obvious choice is a pocket door. I love these things. You can gain about 10 square feet when you get rid of the door this way. (oh by the way, I am thinking of doing a post call "Where's Buddy" instead of Waldo, he is almost always in the picture "helping out", look for him)

This is an ALL Justin project. I found the cabinets and he did all the work. But I will be taking it from here, so I will do my part too. Here he is removing the door and it's casings.

The man behind the curtain.
This is our easy out for putting in a pocket door. (Keep in mind, this is not a bearing wall.) We take out the most hidden side, stick in the pocket structure thing, then screw it all back in place and voila! We even reuse the original drywall. All in about 2-3 hours.
We removed the single shelf, then we reused it on the other side of the room.
Here is is almost put in place on the other side, a free shelf!! I love reusing things! Here are the cabinets I got at the Restore. The two 42" inch high ones where $38.00 for both and the doors are the same style as my kitchen cabinets next door! AWESOME! The full height, three door unit was $25.00, and we have doors for this as well, but I threw away the disgusting hardware, and will be getting new stuff. Lastly for now, Justin made four adjustable shelves that can hold laundry detergent and cat food in pretty containers. The whole thing will be painted white and we are wrapping crown molding around the top to make it look like one solid unit.
To be continued...
