One of my biggest gripes with our home is our coat closet.  It is a very crucial area for us and all we get is a dinky closet.


My dreams are filled with large mudrooms...

So last year I thought about what I could do to maximize space in our tiny closet.  

First and foremost, we took off the door.  Didn't help it's cause when within an hour or two of arriving in our home (before the movers even showed up) a nice little hole was punched into it from the door to the garage opening and hitting it.  Nice design there.  {To see our home's layout, scroll to the bottom of this post, although it's backwards, but you'll get the point of our awkward garage entry way.}   I never filled in the hinge holes though, just painted them...can't decide if it's worth it or not....  Then I took down the standard white wire hanging shelf (that was too high for the kids to reach so their coats were constantly lining the floor), and I created 2 hanging hook racks for one side and searched high and low for the perfect shelf for the other side.  Well, when the closet is only a little wider than the door frame itself, it was very difficult.  So I made do with our old shoe rack and a couple baskets (one for hats, gloves and other *extras* and the other for the kids shoes).  This design worked out alright.  The girls could hang up and get their own coats and backpacks, but it still seemed like it could be better...especially when the kids dumped the basket to find their shoes...

 For the past 3 years, our master closet doors have been on my To-Do list for our condo.  The doors were half louvered, half solid, and had blah hardware.  I had called a few local places and searched the web to find doors to replace them.  Apparently the door sizes were not in stock anywhere and would have had to be custom made - which we all know what that means!  I was quoted $300...PER DOOR!!!  Uhhh, no thanks!

Closets are rooms too...  And they deserve matching hangers

When we moved into our house, I painted my closet before I even put anything in there. So that’s why this before doesn’t have any clothes in it. It’s the same color as the back of my built in that I refinished. Ben Moore paint is expensive and I want my money’s worth! Plus I adore this color. Then, I hung up my black chandelier I got from Hobby Lobby, only $25. I L.O.V.E. that store. Looks like I need to do a little dusting, oops!

Here is the full view. Its not a huge walk-in closet maybe just a “step in” closet because I can’t do any walking in here, at least, not for exercise. I did my best to make the most of the space. There is still So. Much. Stuff. that just won’t fit in here. Someday, I would like all of my clothes, accessories, shoes and bags to be together, they deserve it.

What is a cloffice you ask? Well... our entry-way closet and our office had a baby and my husband named him "Cloffice". As I've mentioned, our office/craft room has been taken over by our soon to be baby #2 (only 5 wks, yay!) so, I had to have a place for my computer desk and office stuff. Bryan really helped out as usual and did a ton of work! There is actually a lot of storage for my pictures, computer programs and all of our office supplies. I love my little cloffice!

This is the doorway to the bedroom my sons share. Funny, you'd think this would be the messiest room in the house— two boys sharing a room. But guess what? It's the neatest! Yes, after eleven months of paint-staking attic renovations (by my brother-in-law) and one home equity loan later, our boys prefer sleeping in the guest room downstairs. But I digress. The wooden arch was carved from a tree branch in my brother-in-law's backyard. Double pocket doors slide closed for privacy when they're older.

Well after a few weeks of painting, tracing, painting some more, shopping, organizing tons of papers, putting together a chair and a file cabinet, installing shelving, hooking up electronics and labeling everything, I think the Cloffice is ready for it's big reveal! I'm not totally jiving on the placement of some things yet so I might play around with it some more but I really need to move on and get other projects finished up as well. We also did not add electrical outlets or a permanent light fixture to the cloffice because hopefully next summer we will be tearing this down along with the bathroom behind it to open up the  playroom and kitchen eating area to each other and make one big room back here.  We will add a cloffice, powder room and main floor laundry in  the hallway and other closet area that see in a picture below. 
Remember this is what it looked like just a few short weeks ago, this is just so emberassing:

And in the playroom was where we had our "office." I dare you to find a Target receipt or bill in that mess and pay no attention the window that needs to be trimmed out, it's on the list! 

Here it is, almost all cleaned out.....Mr.A really needs to find a home for his guitar!

I am so excited to share my new sewing closet with you today! I wish I could just sit in there and stare at it all day. As you may remember, my motivation to do anything creative has been non-existent since the holidays. A good part of this was due to the fact that my sewing area was a complete wreck. About a week and a half ago I committed myself to getting my sewing area remodeled and organized by the end of January. Well, I didn't waste any time. I have to first and foremost thank my husband for helping me to make it all possible. It took us a full weekend to get everything painted and built and then I took last week to get everything organized and put away. I can't stand to wait any longer! Here's the before and after...

Isn't it incredible?! I never imagined it would turn out this great. I'll tell you a little bit about the building process, and then I'll take you on a little tour of the finished closet.

Before and After Master Closet Makeover

Ronda over at Batchelor's Way has been working on projects in her house that I have loved abd featured in the past.  This Master bedroom closet makeover of hers is one of those must see projects.  I love the his and hers signs especially!  Look how great the space looks now!:

We are finally done with our master CLOSET!! And I'm in LOOOOVE!!!  Here is the after of my side.

I found these jewelry boxes at Downeast Outlet store for $5 each.  I think they look great in my jewelry drawer.  Go here to see how we did the drawers.

I found a cute little oval frame I wanted to make signs out of, but could only find one.  But super neighbor to the rescue.  Shelley found two slightly larger oval frames for me.  ( They only cost 10 cents each.) 

I spray painted them, of coarse.  Then I replace the pictures with some scrapbook paper I had  and finished them off with some vinyl.  I got the vinyl from my great neighbor Shelly.  (You can get the same thing for $2 each!)  I love these signs.  They are the perfect detail.  Go ahead and take them in!!!!!

I also love my new shoe cubbie.  We have so much more storage now.  And it's custom to "our" storage needs.  Plus I love it when my supper functional storage it so dang pretty.

I'm pleased with my stenciled wall.  My last post tells how to make your own stencil like I did.  I got the great quadrafoil basket below on clearance for $7 at Home Goods.  And the wood to build the boxes below that for free.

These shots are a little different angle, but I wanted to show the whole stenciled wall.  Call us crazy, but we took the door off.  We never really shut it, and it allowed us to use the wall space on both sides of the door.

So that is my new closet!  Do ya think it's over the top for a closet?  Maybe, but I love it.  And I get to go in there every day.  In fact I keep sneaking in just to stare at it!!!! Silly me.  Any whoo, I would love your comments!!!!

I would go in there just too look too!

I love the stencil, it gives it a special touch!
