I've seen tons of posts about Wordpress on Tip Junkie. I just searched my google reader and tons of Wordpress blog posts came up. Hope this helps!
Sorry, I have no advice to offer. I tried wordpress for a short time, but found blogger to be much more user friendly.
So, what's the benefit of wp over blogger anyway? I'm just wondering why people choose to switch. What do you gain?
I've heard that a company called RFE does good work. They can transfer all your stuff over to Wordpress and get everything installed for you and also host your Wordpress site. I've been thinking about switching over too. There's just so much more you can do with Wordpress. Good luck!
How sweet of Allison to help you! Her husband is super smart at that stuff too. I use wordpress, can't say I am an expert but I believe you add HTML to your side bar via the add widgets on your dashboard. It always takes me 50 tries (ok that is a exaggeration) before it clicks as to how to do something on wordpress. So with Allison in your court you don't need me, but feel free to email me if you get stumped.
I did the move myself from a blogspot to a wordpress .com. I had no idea what I was doing at first! But I googled a lot and managed it in a weekend. So don't be afraid to try.
I bought one ebook and worked through it. (You can find the link on my Recommendations page: http://thecraftymummy.com/recommendations/) I also visited a blog called Blogging with Amy. She has posts on setting up your WP blog.
Feel free to send me an email if you have more specific questions. I'm happy to share what I've learnt.
WP has several different versions. I am using Thesis, so I would be happy to help you as much as I can.
By gadgets, do you mean widgets? If you go to "Appearance" on the left side, you will find a tab for widgets. Then just right click on the type you want and drag it to the left sidebar section. To add html code, use a text widget.
Hope that helps!!

Good luck! I'm totally clueless.
How nice of Allison to help you out! Give yourself time, take a deep breath and have fun.
I know I am enjoying the different things I can do now that I switched.

Sorry I have no advice Cassity but I'm so frustrated with Blogger lately that I'll be right behind you when you figure it out!

There are a couple of books you can buy that will help - Wordpress for Dummies etc. Adding things is easy because WP has plug ins and widgets that you use. All the hard html work is already done for you. But that being said - I usually hire a WP pro when I want to change something. Be sure you get the WP plug in that sends you your blog data weekly to backup.
Visit your local library; the call number for books on WordPess is 006.752. My favorite is Building a WordPress Blog People Want to Read.
Buy a good template and it's fairly easy- and I'm non-techincal (also a Landscape Architect- Hi Justin!) I like themeforest.net. Templates are $35 and most come with pretty good info. I'm no expert but I've been able to set up several websites now.
You could give http://wordpress.stackexchange.com/ a try. It's a Q&A for WordPress developers and administrators.
Although I have never used it myself, I have used some of the other sites in stackexchange and the standard of the questions and answers is extremely high.
We made the move from Blogger Classic to Wordpress a bit more than a year ago. I was nervous as heck but it was well worth it! This guideline was very helpful:

I have kind of dropped off the face of everything for a while and want to build a better blog before I come back. Thank you all for the great help and links to explore.
Thank you all for your advice... i will look them all over and see if I can get this done... soon! So if the blog looks super crazy soon, you will know why!
