Half Bath Before and After

What we did:

1. Remove wallpaper.
2. Repair walls, prime, and paint.
3. Install plantation shutters
4. Install new toilet paper holder and towel bar
5. Install pedestal sink and faucet
6. DIY artwork

I am happy to say that this is the only room in the house that had wallpaper. The previous owners sure did know how to get their wallpaper to stick! I am so glad that they didn’t decide to wallpaper any other rooms in the house.

I couldn’t be happier with the final result. I love how the pedestal sink keeps the small bathroom feeling open, and along with the fresh paint color the room has a very airy feel. The paint color takes a greener hue with artificial light on and a grayer hue in natural light.  I used a mix of chrome and oil rubbed bronze (ORB) metal finishes. Who says they all have to match? The light fixture, wall plates, and doorknob are ORB and the faucet, towel bar, and TP holder are chrome. The mirror has a gorgous scalloped edge that catches the light beautifully. It ads an almost sparkly touch to the room.

The Score: The most exciting part of the bathroom reno was when we scored the pedestal sink through my favorite means – Craigslist! Yep, that’s right, we bought the sink through good ol’ CL. This sink goes for over $200 new and we purchased it for $35. Since we didn’t love the faucet the sellers used, and the faucet and drain are the parts of the sink that can get a little dingy, we replaced these parts with a new Delta faucet and drain. The porcelain is very easy to clean and disinfect, so the end result was an almost new sink for a fraction of the price.

Storage: Since pedestal sinks do not have storage for handy things like extra toilet paper, I bought a cute toilet paper box that stores two extra rolls. I chose an espresso rattan TP box that ties into the ORB, and the basket weave adds a bit of texture. I figure our guests shouldn’t have too hard a time finding the extra TP. It’s the only place in the entire bathroom they can look!

Window Treatment: We wanted to take advantage of the window in the bathroom for natural light, so we looked for a window treatment that would provide privacy but still allow in some light. The plantation shutter has a divider rail so it is the perfect solution – keep the bottom closed for privacy and the top open to let in light. Plus, the shutters are super easy to clean and I love that they give the room a cottage touch.

DIY Artwork: The final detail we added was some DIY artwork. We bought 4 gallery frames from Pottery Barn and downloaded free prints from Vintage Printable. That’s right, free! I scaled them down to 5×7 and printed out on my color printer. If you haven’t checked out Vintage Printable, you should! It’s a great website and all the prints are free to download.
