Basement Tour By Amanda!
Hey y'all! I'm Amanda from Dixie Delights and I'm just *delighted* to do my very first guest post over here at Remodelaholic! Honey (as my mister is affectionately called) and I just wrapped up an extensive renovation on our basement.
Here's the story that's a year in the making...
Two years ago when we purchased our forty year old home that boasted a "finished basement" clearly they were using the term "finished" lightly. The space was loaded with navy blue carpeting, dark painted paneling, water stained ceilings, various mirrored walls and various other unmentionables. I refused to step foot in it, much less take a picture of it. Hence, I have only a couple of pictures to document the before.
This in progress picture already has the new walls, floors, ceilings, light and drapes. But, as you can see, it was just one big empty room.
We had originally planned to have a professional re-do the space once both littles made it to school. A mold problem in the basement moved that timeline up by a few years, yet we didn't have the cash to bring in a contractor. When Honey, who boasts no construction experience or training, proclaimed that he could "just finish the basement" I had my doubts. But time and again he made my jaw drop time and again with his impressively industrious ability to take something I lickety-split sketched on paper (with a crayon no doubt) and bring it to life.
Having two littles that will one day be teenage boys and a husband that desperately wants a man space, we had the following goals for the basement:
- Make the space look nice, but remain kid, husband and budget friendly. So, when the floors get dented or the walls get scratched I am neither fainting nor screaming.
- A cozy tv area that will comfortably seat four and still allow room for the boys to play the wii.
- A bar area with a sink and dishwasher. We didn't have the dishwasher in our old basement and I hated carting everything up and down the stairs to wash after a party.
- A buffet area for entertaining.
- Plenty of storage for toys and games.
- Space for the pool table begrudgingly brought from our old house.
- Area for dining, crafting, school work, game playing, etc.
- Banquette for seating (and just because I really, really, really want a banquette and have nowhere else to put one.)
And we crossed every. single. one. off the list! Here's the after:
The stairway gallery
TV Room
The Bar
Buffet and Dining/Crafting/Gaming Area
Pool Table / Toy Storage
Banquette
Bathroom
Should you want to peruse the unabridged edition of ALL the titillating details for this entire basement project, look here for the vision, for an eight month update, for the bar reveal, for the finally finished banquette, for the buffet, for the stairway, the bath and here for the den.
I think we'll take the rest of the year off :-)
xoxo
